Matt Stone, Partner & Founder
Matt has 20+ years experience in the global energy industry, working across clean molecules (SAF, hydrogen, methanol, ammonia), renewables, oil & gas, and nuclear. He is an expert on shipping decarbonization and the emerging clean molecules industry.
Previously EVP Advisory & Business Development at Power2X, he led the company’s Consulting business and its early-stage project development portfolio (including SAF, MeOH, and H2 projects), sat on its Investment Committee, and established its London office. Before Power2X, Matt was a Partner at McKinsey & Company where he led the Shipping Decarbonization practice and the firm’s pro bono support to UAE COP28. He was the 2013 Ian Davis Fellow at the McKinsey Global Institute and a 2007 Marshall Scholar.
Advisory experience
- Energy transition & clean molecules: diligenced and launched a clean fuels (H2 and MeOH) project development business for a major shipping company; defined the clean molecules strategy for a top-3 mining company; diligenced a port operator’s capex plans in light of energy transition dynamics (e.g., offshore wind, SAF, green steel); supported e-SAF tech selection across AtJ, MtJ, and FT for investor
- Shipping decarbonization: defined the decarbonization roadmap across efficiency levers and alternative fuels for a top-3 cruise line, a leading small chemical tanker company, and others; assessed how decarbonization may change shipping industry returns for a major investor; designed “buyer’s club” concepts for cargo owners to procure zero-carbon container shipping, and for shipping companies to procure affordable green fuels; designed and launched a multi-stakeholder research & advocacy collaboration on shipping decarbonization
- Corporate finance: supported the Series A raises of start-ups in H2 storage, gridtech, and 2G ethanol/biochar; led the hostile takeover defense for a major automotive & aviation supplier; structured a JV transaction between 2 port companies; delivered over $5bn in sustainable working capital improvements at leading companies in mining, oil & gas, chemicals, advanced electronics, and construction materials
